Lewis C Everett

December 8, 1940 — January 28, 2018

Lewis C. Everett passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018, at his

Florida home from Systemic Mastocytosis and Leukemia, believed

to be a result of exposure to Agent Orange during his service in

the Vietnam War.

As a First Lieutenant in the Army, he proudly served as a Trans-

portation Officer and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was born December 8, 1940, in Danville, Virginia, the youngest

child of Alice Elizabeth (Lewis) and Rueben Nicholas Everett.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Reid and Rueben

Nicholas, Jr. "Jakey,” and survived by his sister, JoAnne

Savaglio, three nieces, two nephews and their children.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 21 years, Leanna. He was stepfather

to Nick Castle and Katie (Chris) Boggs, and Grampie to Kaylee,

Clare, and Bentley. Also surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth

(Dan) Cherkis and Rachel (Brian) Gibson, and a granddaughter,

Bailey.

In high school and college, Lewis excelled at sports. His

athleticism and desire to do more with his life got the attention

of two beneficiaries who funded his education at Hampden-

Sydney College in Virginia, which was established in 1776 and is one of the last

all-male colleges. He lettered in every sport he played, but his

competitive nature and talent on the football field taught him

teamwork, perseverance, and how to overcome adversity — lessons

that stayed with him throughout his life.

After Vietnam, Lewis began his securities career at Merrill Lynch.

In 1977 he joined Wheat First as a V.P. and Branch Office

Manager in Wilmington, North Carolina. As Vice Chairman of

Wheat First Butcher Singer (now known as Wells Fargo Advisors)

a regional stockbrokerage firm headquartered in Richmond,

Virginia, Lewis was known as being tough but always fair, and was

well respected by the "Wheaties" and the financial industry.

Retiring in 1999, Lewis, a lifelong fisherman, and Leanna enjoyed

many adventures with Captain John aboard their sport fishing boat,

Shangri-La. Playing golf, tennis, and working out kept Lewis busy

in Florida when he and Leanna weren't traveling the world or he

wasn't procuring fine wines for their cellar or doing genealogy

research.

The Lewis C. Everett Stadium at Hampden-Sydney is Lewis'

legacy and gave him great joy since the dedication ceremony in

September 2007. He was very proud of living the American dream,

being born into a very humble life and being able to give back to

Hampden-Sydney, the Cleveland Clinic, and other charities that he

and Leanna chose to support.

Among those mourning his passing are Leanna's family, Hampden-

Sydney alumni and staff, a host of business associates, and many

friends at Sailfish Point.

A celebration of his life officiated by Pastor Keith Leach will be

held on Saturday, February 3, at Hampden-Sydney College

Church with visitation beginning at 11:00a.m., service and burial

beginning at 1:00p.m., with repast to follow.
