Barbara Ann Dixon

October 13, 1945 — July 30, 2014

Barbara Ann Sullivan Dixon passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her family. She was born in San Antonio, Texas and is preceded in death by her late and loving mother Dorothy Huddle Sullivan and uncle, Thomas Cooper Huddle and aunt, Fran W. Huddle of Texas. She is survived by her husband of almost fifty years Gene B. Dixon, Jr. of Buckingham County and three children, Guy B. Dixon and daughter-in-law Julie Kline Dixon, Arch Huddle Dixon and his fiancé Charlene Lendes and Erica Vail Dixon. She will be tremendously missed by her three grandchildren Adelaide, Waller, and Henry Dixon who affectionately called her Ya Ya. She graduated with honors from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1967 where she later served on the Board of Trustees and has a scholarship named in her honor. She was devoted Episcopalian and a vibrant member of many community organizations. She served for many years on the Board of Directors of Theater Virginia and STEPS, Inc. In more recent years she served on the Board of Amazement Square in Lynchburg and the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in Farmville. Barbara enjoyed a life long passion for horses and riding and was a devoted member of the Oak Ridge Hunt Club. (She was one of the few women in the Commonwealth who could convince a horse to jump a round bale of hay in the middle of an open field.) Known for that tenacity, her brilliant mind and vivacious personality, she will be deeply missed by many. The family will receive friends at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 2 at her Buckingham home, Chellowe, followed by a graveside service at 6:30 p.m. at Peaceful Valley in Buckingham. Memorial contributions can be made to Amazement Square, 27 9TH ST. Lynchburg, VA 24504 or to the Heart of Virginia Free Clinic at PO Box 142, Farmville. Puckett Funeral Home is serving the family. www.puckettfh.com
