Beatrice Cobb 'Bea' Hartig

February 17, 1922 — September 9, 2011

Beatrice Cobb Hartig, 89, of Farmville departed this life very peacefully Friday afternoon with family by her side. She had fought a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s for the last seven years. She was born February 17, 1922 in Cullen, VA to the late John Beach and Virgie Etta Berkley Cobb. Bea and her husband, Ben, were the founders of Town and Country Furniture in 1962. When Ben passed away unexpectedly in 1970, she became a pioneer in businesses owned by women in the Farmville area. She served as President of the company until she retired in 2004. She was at the store everyday, and was affectionately referred to as “Miss Bea” by customers, employees, and suppliers alike. Even today, people come into the store expecting to see her working. Bea was an active member of Heritage Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Penny Puckett, and husband, Charles, two grandsons, Dayton and wife, Toni, and Daniel and wife, Brandy. She also had two great- grandchildren, Hadley and Charlton, which she adored; her brothers, Berlie Cobb and his wife, Betty and Berkley Cobb, her sisters, Phyllis Atkins and her husband, Jack and Ida South. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben and her brothers, George and John Cobb. Services will be held at Puckett Funeral Home on Milnwood Road in Farmville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, consider the Alzheimer’s Association, The Gideon’s, Heritage Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.
