Ranson, Doris Jean Adcock 67 of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on December 31, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James Douglas Ranson, Jr. She was born January, 25, 1944 to Tucker Rice and Betty Ballowe Adcock of Buckingham. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Marie Ranson of Cumberland and two brothers Bernard Adcock of Appomattox and Tucker Adcock of Albemarle County. She was a graduate of Buckingham High School and has served as a Notary Public for Cumberland County. She would always ask, “How may I help you?” for she was ready to lend a helping hand to anyone and enjoyed serving the public. She was employed by a garment factory in Buckingham and a department store in Dillwyn for a short time before marrying Douglas Ranson on April 16, 1966. Jean and Doug were the owner/operators of the family business, Hillcrest, for most of their married life, along with his parents, James and Hulda Ranson. She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning and preparing meals with her mother-in-law, Hulda Ranson, in the restaurant section of Hillcrest. She retired with her husband in 1997 the family business which served the public for over 65 plus years. The couple was active participants in an Amway distributorship for several years along with supporting Prince Edward Academy’s band boosters, Cumberland Vol. Rescue Squad and Cumberland Vol. Fire Department. We would like special mention to several devoted and caring individuals who assisted Jean and her family with her care: Walter “Dickie” and Regina Fahrner, Sheriff Daryl Hodges, Kenneth Kidd, Shameka Bolden, Sherry Keller, Mary E. Honebein, Deana Milliner, Rita Braxton, Della Guthrie, and Louise Booker. Family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 6th from 6p.m. – 8p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville, VA. Graveside services will be held at 2p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7th at Center Presbyterian Church, Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery. Please join the family for refreshments and remembrances of Jean after the graveside service in the fellowship hall of Payne Memorial Church at Cumberland Courthouse.
