James G. Mcgall Sr.

James G. McGall Sr., 80, of Farmville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born in Newark, NJ on February 3, 1933 and moved to Union NJ at six years of age. He attended Franklin Grammar School and Union High School, graduating in June 1951. Mr. McGall attended the University of Virginia, graduating in June 1955 with a degree in Industrial Psychology and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He spent the next two years in the US Army stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. Mr. McGall worked for 1st & Merchants Bank in Richmond for five years, before moving to Farmville to work for Brisentine Oil Co. for the next 20 years. He then worked for Ellington Energy Service for five years, and finished his career with Enterprise Car Rental for 10 years before retiring. Mr. McGall was a past member, squad leader and past secretary of the Henrico Vol. Rescue Squad, Richmond, co-founder of the Prince Edward Vol. Rescue Squad and 1st Squad president for two years; campaign chairman and past president of the Prince Edward Co. Heart Association; past treasurer of Wedgewood Country Club; and past president of Farmville Memorial Recreation Association. He proudly served as past treasurer, secretary and board member of the Farmville Jaycees, was the recipient of the JC Spark Plug for six years, awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Farmville Jaycees in 1970, and was listed in the 1970 Edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. He served as past treasurer of the High Bridge Railroad Club, served on the Board of Viewers for the Town of Farmville for eight years, as a member of the Farmville Exchange Club, past member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and a Deputy Sheriff for Prince Edward County for 35 years. He enjoyed his experience as public address announcer at Prince Edward Academy for 18 years and at Hampden-Sydney College for eight years. He was inducted into the Prince Edward Academy/Fuqua School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005, became a member of the Farmville/Prince Edward County Tourism Board in 2008, and was elected a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni in 2005 at the University of Virginia. Mr. McGall is survived by three children, James G. McGall Jr. of Farmville, Joni M. Elliott and husband, Timothy of Powhatan, and Jeffrey A. McGall of Richmond; seven grandchildren, Jennifer C. Davey and Jessica L. Arriaga of Castaic, CA, Kassi R. Atkins and Korey L. Atkins of Chesterfield, Erin A. McGall and James G. McGall III of Belvidere, NJ, and Lukas M. McGall of Groveland, CA, and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew M. McGall and Evelyn K. McGall, and his beloved wife of 13 years, Phyllis Clifton McGall. A celebration of his life with friends and family will be held at Puckett Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 12, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Westview Cemetery on Wednesday, February 13, at 11 a.m. Donations can be made in his memory to the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad http://www.princeedwardrescue.com or the American Cancer Society at http://www.cancer.org/.
