Obituary for Joseph Otto Brodie Jr.
On Sunday, April 28, 2019 at age 61, Joseph Otto Brodie, Jr. succumbed to complications from a protracted illness. He joins in Heaven brothers Jimmy and John; sister, Winifred (Bunny); and parents Joseph and Winifred. He is survived by son, Brett, and daughter, Devon; sisters Margaret, Maureen and Nellie; 12 nieces and nephews; and ex-wife, Kathy Redd Brodie. Joe was from Philadelphia. He started his career with IBM there and moved to Washington, DC, Atlanta, Georgia, and Hillsborough, NC to work with the company. He stayed there 28 ½ years. Joe loved hockey, horses, fishing, and all things Elvis. He played ice hockey as a youngster and then coached youth hockey in Atlanta and Hillsborough. He was an excellent and beloved Coach (“Coach Joe”), and he helped many young hockey players with developing good sportsmanship and skills. Joe took great joy in raising, training and riding horses. He had a great instinct for breeding good stock, and many of his “horse children” were top performers in the hunter/jumper arena. Joe loved songs and movies by Elvis Presley. After he left IBM, he started a new career as an Elvis Tribute artist. He could really sing! In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the fund we are establishing in his memory: North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association (NCHJA) Joseph O. Brodie Fund, 4441 Six Forks Road, Suite 106 – 167, Raleigh, NC 27601. We plan to provide money for scholarships and helmets for young equestrians. Puckett Funeral Home is serving the family. www.puckettfh.com.
