Karen Kay Mahan

July 5, 1953 — January 10, 2014

Karen Kay Mahan was born on July 5, 1953 in Mahnomen, MN to Parse and Rene Treumer. Karen was the youngest of three children. She attended school in Hallock & Thief River Falls, MN and then graduated from Huguenot High School in Richmond VA. She was remembered as that cute little girl with the shiny blond hair and a big smile, getting on the school bus. She was always ready for mischief, fun and games. Her nickname became KK very early on in life. Her life on earth ended on January 10, 2014. Karen attended and graduated in 1975 from Longwood College in Farmville, VA. It was there that she met and married Bradley Layne. Their son, Gabriel, was born shortly after. They traveled a bit with Bradley’s work but returned and settled in Farmville. Karen worked at Green Front and eventually started her custom rug design business - which her son Gabriel continues today. After Bradley’s death, she married Pug Mahan. Together they lived and worked at the Mahan “junk yard”. During their years there, Karen also continued to build rugs, through her business. Her mother, Rene moved in and lived with them when she became ill. Karen was the primary caretaker of her mom until her death 2 years ago. She also was a caretaker of Pug’s dad, Ralph, until his death. After Pug’s death, she made a conscious choice to live a life of sobriety. She was extremely proud of reaching her 3 year mark last November. During that time, she enjoyed finding treasures to sell in local consignment stores. She had recently started working part time at Rug Rats which is owned by her college roommate, Sandy Henderson. Family and friends were always important to her. She cherished the time with them. She rarely missed her morning chat with her sister. If someone needed/wanted anything, she would do her best to see that it happened. Karen lived a life of many extremes - she ran full tilt. Because her early life was so grounded in her Christian faith, she was able to draw on that for the last several years. Karen was a gifted writer and would routinely write her thoughts and prayers into a Prayer Journal. Preceding her in death are her parents (Parse Treumer, Rene and Vincent Nelson), husbands, Bradley Layne and Pug Mahan, brother Gary Treumer, and cousin, Tom Reinke. Surviving and missing her are: her son Gabriel Layne, sister, Pamela Treumer (Dennis Norrell), step mother Terry Treumer, Uncle Bill and Aunt Joyce Reinke, & special partner, Joey Companion. She is also survived by an extended loving family, step children Bradley Layne Jr and wife Leisa of Dillwyn, Angie Edwards and husband Walter of Dillwyn, Pug Mahan Jr, Jeremy Mahan and wife Kelly, Billy Jo Wilkerson, Brooke Mahan and Madonna Mahan and husband Micah. Step Grandchildren, Savannah, Austin, Tessa, Tate, Eden, Lance, Dylan, and Walter. Step Great grandchild Aiden. Puckett Funeral Home of Farmville will handled her cremation. Any memorials are asked to be directed to the Southside Area Red Cross, PO Box 1261, Hopewell, VA 23860, who helped her family after their house fire. A celebration of life gathering will be held on Jan. 14, 2014 from 6:00PM – 9:00PM at Puckett Funeral home. A prayer and memorial service will be held in May at The Mahan’s. Date will be forthcoming.
