Margaret Kachadoorian

March 28, 1919 — October 2, 2013

Margaret Lydia Menendian Kachadoorian, widow of Leo Kachadoorian, passed away Wednesday October 2. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 28, 1919 to parents Keteon Aristotle Menendian and Isabel Papazian Menendian of Armenian descent. With two older brothers, Raymond and Ernest, Margaret was the apple of her father’s eye. A graduate of East High School (Columbus), Dennison University and Ohio State University, Margaret earned a Masters of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. She met her husband, Leo, in New York through a mutual friend on July 4, 1949. It was love at first sight. They were married six months later, January 28, 1950 in Columbus and honeymooned in Williamsburg, Virginia. They were blessed with two loving daughters. Her love of teaching kept her in the classroom for 25 years before retiring in 1978. She ended her teaching career working with a federal reading program, similar to the Bookmobile. She and her husband, Leo, retired to Daytona Beach, Florida. She was very active in bridge clubs, driving for Meals on Wheels and an enthusiastic member of the Newcomer’s Club. She and Leo also keep in contact with other Armenian families in the area and participated in various Armenian cultural events. In 1984, the couple moved to Farmville, Virginia where they spent their golden years. She stayed active in bridge clubs, playing Mahjong, driving for Meals on Wheels for a number of years and as a Delta Kappa Gamma sorority member. She was a proud member of the Farmville Woman’s Club and was a tour guide extraordinaire—she would organize and lead day trips and tours to various points of interest. She and Leo were active members of the Farmville Presbyterian Church. She sang in the church choir as well as the Commonwealth Chorale. She lived and loved life to the fullest. She is survived by her daughters Nancy (Hoke) Currie of Farmville, VA ; Carol Kachadoorian, Washington, D.C. and grandchildren Margaret (Meg) Currie-Coyoy, Winston-Salem, NC; Jacob Currie, Washington, D.C.; Ossana Wolff of Phoenix, AZ and Mara Wolff of Alexandria, VA, a great grandson Emilio; and one niece and two nephews. In lieu of flowers donations, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels, Farmville Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choosing.
