Nellie Larrea Hassett, 96, of Farmville, VA passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at her home. She was born September 20, 1923 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Nellie and her sister came to the United States in 1958 to take part of an internship nursing program with Medical College of Virginia. The sisters then decided to bring both families to Richmond where they were sponsored by Ginter Park Baptist Church. She worked as a registered nurse at the Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Eye Hospital from 1958 to 1977. She retired from Richmond Eye Hospital in 1977 as head operating room nurse. She moved to Franklin in 1977 when she married Harry Hassett. She moved to Farmville in 2003. She was an active member of Worsham Baptist Church and the Fun Serving Jesus Team. She was a truly devoted mother, grandmother and Abuelita.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hassett, and her parents Alfredo and Antonia Larrea. She is survived by her daughter Maria V. Jones and husband, Dempsey Jones; grandson Edgar Jones and wife Erin; grandson Thomas Jones; granddaughter Elizabeth Jones; great-grandsons Harrison, Jackson, Graham and Landon Penn Jones; sister Juana Fagalde; two nephews Rene and John Fagalde; niece Nellie Withers; one step-daughter Valerie Drazan and husband Dennis; caretaker and special friend Tracy Hamilton.
Funeral services will be held at Worsham Baptist Church 6708 Farmville Road Farmville, VA on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 10 AM followed by a luncheon for family and friends. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, VA.
