Reverend Hardie Taylor Butler Iii

The Reverend Hardie Taylor Butler, III, of Farmville, formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away in his home on Monday, May 13, 2013. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on September 1, 1938 to the late Hardie Taylor Butler Jr. and Juanita Shultz Butler. Reverend Butler received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from Mercer University where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Intercollegiate Debate Council. He received a Master of Science in Social Work degree in 1963 from the University of Tennessee. Reverend Butler served in the Medical Service Corps of the United States Army from 1963 to 1966, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He married the former Carol Jane Bass in 1964. Reverend Butler retired from the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Decatur, Georgia in 1995 after 31 years of service. He moved to Farmville in 2006 to be closer to his family, was a member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, and was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 2011. Surviving are a son, Brian Taylor Butler and wife, Kimberly Whitehead Butler of Farmville; grandchildren, Charles Brandon Whitehead, Andrew Taylor Butler and Camryn Elizabeth Butler of Farmville, and Andrew Joseph Shue, Johnathon Lampton Shue, Emily Jane Shue, and Samantha Leigh Shue of Georgia; great-grandchildren, Noah Alexander Whitehead and Olivia Louise Whitehead of Virginia, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol Jane Bass Butler, a daughter, Allison Jane Butler Shue, and a brother, Franklin Gary Butler. Family will receive friends on Monday, May 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at John's Memorial Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of Virginia Free clinic or Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Cemetery:
Burial will follow at a later time in Arlington Memorial Park in Georgia.
