Obituary for Robert T. Redd
Robert T. "Bob" Redd of Rice, Virginia, died at his home on October 2, 2015. Bob was born in 1928 to C. T. and Louise Owen Redd of Green Bay, Virginia, and was the youngest of their eight children. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Shepard Redd; his daughter, Kathy Redd Brodie of Farmville; his grandson, Brett Joseph Brodie; and his granddaughter, Devon Scott Brodie, both of North Carolina. His son, Robert T. Redd, Jr., died in 1992 at the age of 33.
Bob graduated from Green Bay High School in 1945. He often joked that he was in the top 10 of his class of 11. He attended Virginia Tech where he majored in Animal Husbandry and pitched for the travel baseball team. After graduation in 1949, he married Frances and moved to San Antonio, TX, where he served in the army for two years. Upon his return to Virginia, Bob farmed with his father and taught at Worsham High School. In 1959, he joined the Prince Edward School Foundation and served as the Headmaster/Administrator of Prince Edward Academy in Farmville for nearly 40 years. Bob's leadership contributed greatly to the success and expansion of the school. He was committed to achieving excellence in education and athletics and to steadfastly supporting his faculty and staff. He was cherished and admired deeply by his family, friends, faculty/staff, and thousands of Prince Academy graduates, all of whom benefited from his thoughtful guidance. He retired in 1996.
Bob loved spending time with his family and friends, singing Christmas songs around the piano, gardening, playing with his sweet kitties, and watching Virginia Tech football, especially when Tech beat UVA!
Bob will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, his family asks friends to honor him by making a contribution to the Robert T. Redd Fund for Professional and Academic Advancement (PO Drawer 328, Farmville, VA 23901) and/or to the Southside SPCA (PO Box 66, Meherrin, VA 23954).
There will be visitations at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville from 4 - 7PM on Monday, October 5th and from noon - 2PM on Tuesday, October 6th. The funeral service will be held at Puckett at 2PM on Tuesday, with the graveside service to follow.
