Wilbur Charles 'Chuck' Stanley

Wilbur Charles (“Chuck” ) Stanley, born April 15, 1931, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at home in Cumberland, VA . He was born in Bessemer, PA, where he lived his early years. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilbur Lester and Dorothy May Pollock and sister, Barbara Stanley Hennon. Chuck leaves two sisters, Diane Stanley Pratuch, Goodyear, AZ ; and Karen Mae Stanley, Mt. Pleasant, SC, to share in his memories. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, and his four children: Robert (Judy, a dear friend); Thomas (Janice), Judith Gooding (Tim), of Stamford, CT; Pamela Pavlos(George), of Woodinville, WA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Damian, Richmond, VA; Amanda S. King (Andrew) of Australia; Ryan Thomas of Cumberland, VA; Dayna Jaye, Farmville, VA; Nicholas Gooding of Berkeley, CA; Paul Pavlos of Woodinville, WA; Ethan Gooding of Amherst, MA; Ché Melendez of New York, NY and Christopher Pavlos of Pullman, WA. Following graduation from Bessemer High School, Chuck graduated from West Virginia University with his degree in Forest Management. He then fulfilled his ROTC duty as 1st Lieutenant at (what was then) Ft. Devens, MA. Following his move with Joanne, to Virginia in 1956, they settled with the Virginia Division of Forestry (VDF) in Farmville, VA. He also served the VDF in Gloucester, VA; and at the State Forest Headquarters in Cumberland. In the late ‘80’s, he was appointed Chief of Forest Management in the Charlottesville Headquarters office until his retirement, after 33 years, in 1989. Chuck was a member of the Society of American Foresters, Appalachian section, and was elected a Fellow in 1991; the Virginia Forestry Association; American Forestry Association and the West Virginia University School of Forestry Alumni Association. While in Farmville, Chuck was a member of the Farmville Presbyterian Church and served on the diaconate and session during his membership. He also was a member of the choir for many years. Chuck enjoyed the out-of-doors. His many activities were centered around the young people as he coached church league basketball, Farmville Little League and worked with the Farmville Recreation Department. He was Scoutmaster for the Farmville Presbyterian Church-sponsored Boy Scouts and enjoyed his years with the Farmville Jaycees. Chuck was also a very active member of the Cumberland Ruritan and the Buckingham Cattle Association. Chuck enjoyed his profession and served others before himself. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 11:00am at Farmville Presbyterian Church with interment to follow on Friday at 2:00pm in the Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery in Amelia. Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 31, 2013 6:00-8:00pm at the Puckett Funeral Home. Puckett Funeral Home is serving the family.
