Bethel Jean
House
July 8, 1927 – April 29, 2026
Jean R. House, Jean was born Bethel Jean Ross on July 8, 1927 in Waynesburg PA to John W and Bethel Kessler Ross. Jean was the youngest of five children, Virginia Ross Evans (Brice), John L. Ross (Carolyn), William K. Ross (Leota) and Nell Ross Aiken (George), who all preceded Jean in death. Jean graduated from Waynesburg High School in1945 and showed an interest in nursing as she worked at Waynesburg Hospital, while still a student. She then attended Saint Margaret’s School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated with a Registered Nursing Degree in 1949. She married William “Herb” House on June 26, 1950 and after working as a nurse in the hospital in Waynesburg and Greensburg PA, she moved to Westfield, PA where Herb was employed by Consolidated Natural Gas as a welder. Jean did some private duty as a nurse in the Westfield area as well as working in Coudersport and Wellsboro, PA. Jean also worked at the Broad Acres nursing home in Wellsboro. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Westfield where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Jean loved music and had a beautiful voice, but saved it for church and the pleasure of her family. She also was a gifted artist and her paintings are displayed in the homes of friends and family. She also was a life member and former Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter #33 in Westfield. Jean and Herb raised three sons in the Cowanesque Valley area, Jeff born in 1957, Mark in 1959 and Alan in 1964. Jean and Herb were very involved and supportive of the activities of their boys ranging from scouting (three Eagle Scouts) to athletics. Beginning in Little league and carrying on through college, they rarely missed a game home or away! From working concession stands to helping coach, fund raise or ride, they were always there for their family. They put three boys through college and upon Herb’s retirement in 1980, traveled the United States in their fifth-wheel camper. They also decided to relocate to warmer weather in Florida and lived in Summerfield, FL and enjoyed the area fine weather while golfing, and visiting family. They also traveled to various countries around the world, making new friends and memories. Later on, they relocated to the Farmville, VA area to be closer to their boys. Jean lost her beloved husband of over 60 years on December 10, 2010 at the age of 86. They shared many precious memories together and she cherished those memories every day. Her middle son Mark upon retirement, relocated to Farmville from Newport News to help Jeff take care of their mom. Jean leaves her three sons, Jeff, Mark and Alan, daughter in law Jane, grandsons Drake (Nova), Tyler (Nicole) and Seth, granddaughters Alyssa (Ali) and Jaela (Ryan) and great grandsons Tristan and Emmett, to mourn and celebrate the wonderful life she lived and countless lives she touched.
