Betty Hash Sumner, 95, of Farmville, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025.
Betty was born on June 27, 1930, in Fox Creek, VA, to Albert Hobson and Notra Graybeal Hash.
Betty attended Kentucky Christian College in Grayson, KY. She became a dental assistant in Independence, VA and this is where she met the love of her life, Kyle. They were married September 3, 1949. In 1967 Betty graduated from the inaugural Licensed Practical Nurse program through Southside School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse in long term care, the operating room at the hospital, and various roles in community health. Later, she became a consultant with Country Home Collection/The Workshops of Gerald Henn, where she was one of the top sales persons for multiple years. Betty was an active member of Farmville United Methodist Church for decades, helping out in many capacities and developing lifelong friendships. Her servant heart extended to the greater community, volunteering at The Woodland as well. Betty’s greatest love was her family - her husband, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Kyle Robert Sumner; daughter Notra Kylene Sumner; granddaughter Erika Susan Sumner; brother Walbert Hash; sisters Jerry Pitsenbarger, Carolyn Cannoy, Wilma Thomas, and Maxine Anderson.
She is survived by her sons Timothy Kyle (Jane) of Manassas, VA, and Anthony Walbert (Amy) of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren: Elizabeth Kylene Sumner Perkins (Will) of Richmond, VA, Jonathan Kyle Sumner (Barbie) of Owens Crossroads, AL, Lydia Jane Sumner (Justin Hardison) of Gainesville, VA, Juliana Kristin Sumner Burgess (Tyler) of Midlothian, VA, and Emily Joelle Sumner (Roi Kawai) of Saint Paul, MN; and ten great-grandchildren: Henry Perkins, Tucker Burgess, Joshua Sumner, Eliza Jane Burgess, Michael Sumner, Aya Kawai, Charles Perkins, Raegan Sumner, Easton Burgess, and Toji Kawai.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the Farmville United Methodist Church, 212 High Street, Farmville. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM. A reception at the church will follow. Interment will be at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia at a later date.
