Bonnie Vernon Smith, Age, 82 went home to be with the Lord at her home in Farmville, on Monday November 25, 2024.
Bonnie was born in South Boston, Virginia on July 20, 1942 to the late William Irvin and Mary Dickerson Vernon of the Alton community, in Halifax County. She was the oldest of four children. Her sister Christine Vernon preceded her in death. Christine’s son Phillip Waskey and daughter Tina Boze are also deceased. Bonnie is survived by a brother William Irvin Vernon Jr. (Billy) and wife Bonnie Dawson Vernon, their children and grandchildren of Alton, Virginia. Bonnie’s youngest brother Grady and his wife Joan Ridgeway Vernon of Alton, Virginia, children and grandchildren also survived Bonnie. She is also survived by brother-in-law Curtis Smith, wife Brenda Smith of Brookneal, Virginia, their children and grandchildren and brother-in-law Myron Smith from South Boston, Virginia.
Bonnie was married to L. Ronald (Ron) Smith on July 26, 1960 and celebrated sixty four years of marriage this year. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonita Lynn Smith. Bonnie is survived by a son, Ronald Craig Smith and wife Sheri Hardiman Smith, Grandson Ryan Craig Smith, all of Churchville, Virginia and Grandson Chase Hunter Smith and Wife Dr. Mekaela Kaplan Smith and Bonnie’s great-grandson Lowndes of Crozet, Virginia.
Bonnie is also survived by a daughter, Cynthia Dawn Smith-Marshall and husband Steve of Virginia Beach, Virginia, grandson Cameron Austin Marshall and wife Sarah in Lynchburg, Virginia, grandson Garrett Preston Marshall and his wife Laura in Chesapeake, Virginia, and grandson Nathaniel Caleb Marshall in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Although family was her first priority, she worked outside the home at Lancaster Law firm, Virginia Farm Bureau and Longwood University Library. She finished her career as the Treasurer of MGW Communication companies retiring in November 2020. Active in community, she served in both Concord Baptist and Deerfield Baptist church in the women’s missions groups, youth group, Sunday school and Vacation Bible school.
In the early 2000s along with husband Ron, they worked with unreached people groups in Zambia, Africa on three different mission trips. Recognized by Blue Ridge Community College and the State Community College system for outstanding service and student support. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ, her family, and loved and served all that God put in her path. As her health declined, God provided loving caregivers, Tracy, Teresa, Megan and Annie, to assist with her daily care.
She was loved and treasured by her husband, children, grandsons, great grandson, family and friends.
