Edward Franklin Metcalf, Sr. of Moneta, Virginia passed away peacefully on September the 30th 2026 at the age of 86. Born in Darlington Heights, Virginia on February 6th, 1940, to the late John Lewis Metcalf and Lillian Shorter Metcalf. Edward was a gentle spirit, fun, kind, and loving. He had a memorable laugh, unforgettable blue eyes, and a big heart. He loved going and doing things with people and enjoying simple things in life. He enjoyed good food, good people, and life with people around him.
Edward graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte County, Virginia. He continued his education at Lynchburg College and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1962 with a degree in agriculture and life sciences. While he was a member of Alpha Zeta and Corporate Cadets, he also participated in livestock judging. Thus, his lifelong love for cattle.
Edward or Ed, as some people called him, was the owner and operator of the Lynchburg Livestock Market. Under his management, Lynchburg became the first market to offer a state-graded weekly auction of cattle. He was inducted into the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame in 2021.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Mable Frances Via Metcalf and a brother, Lewis Shorter Metcalf. Edward is survived by his son Edward Franklin Metcalf Jr. “Frankie” (Jill). Edward considered Frances’ daughters as his own and they include Lisa Via (Derek Sarver) and Tracy Broughman (Mike). Ed considered Frances’ brother, Boyd Greever (Julie Walls) as a son. Frances and Edward always enjoyed the five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving relatives include his sister-in-law of many years, Barbara Doss Metcalf. His niece, Cynthia Metcalf Hargrove, and nephew Jeff Metcalf (Jennifer) also are family member survivors. It is with much gratitude and appreciation to Lisa, Tracy, and Boyd for the love and care they continued to give Ed after Frances’ passing.
Services will be held at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Darlington Heights, Virginia on October the 3rd ,2026. Visitation will be at 10 o’clock and the funeral service will be at 11 o’clock. A graveside service will take place at Central Cemetery in Burkes Garden, Virginia at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 4. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Good Samaritan Hospice (4751 Cove Road, Roanoke, Va. 24017) or The Burkes Garden Cemetery Association (c/o Barbara Rhudy, 7756 Burkes Garden Road, Tazewell VA 25641)
