Frieda Sams Newman

Frieda Sams Newman, 88 of Cumberland, VA passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. She is the daughter of the late Fred and Martha Sams, and was born on October 6, 1937 in Unicoi County, Tennessee. She loved to knit and crochet, read, watch hummingbirds at the feeder, and spend time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, and loved participating in activities with her church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Billy A. Franklin, Sr., her second husband, William M. Newman; daughters Tammy Carter and Nancy Jeroloman; sister Elinor Godsey, and brothers Coy Roland “Buddy” Sams, and Eugene Sams.

She is survived by her son Billy Allen Franklin, Jr. (Sharon) of Farmville; daughter Donna L. Franklin of Alexandria VA; step daughter Kim N. White (Cliff) of Cumberland, and two step sons, Paul Newman (Theresa) of Prospect, and Ben Newman (Anna) of Gainesville, VA; 11 grandchildren,16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at 3:15 pm in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
