Gary Thomas Phelps, Sr. of Farmville, Virginia, formerly of Portsmouth, Virginia, went to be home with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 14, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Mary, two children, Gary (Ellen) of Farmville, Virginia, Sheila (Ronnie) Pate of Vanceboro, North Carolina, grandchildren, Gabby, Brenna, and Jared of Farmville, Virginia, Kristie and Josh of Vanceboro, North Carolina, and a grandson, Chase, of Vanceboro North Carolina. He is also survived by his brother Terry (Wendy) Phelps of Suffolk, Virginia and Kimberly Phelps Ambrose (Billy) of Jamesville, North Carolina, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is a member of Woodmen of the World, a member of the Virginia Country Music Association/Portsmouth, Virginia Chapter and a member of the Pinecrest Baptist Church in Portsmouth. Mr. Phelps is a Veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned several medals, including The Purple Heart. The patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him, as his friends and family will attest. The family would like to thank Centra Hospice for the care they gave him, and to his dear caregiver, Bernice. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 2:00pm at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations to Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org would be greatly appreciated.
