Dr. Gwen Eddleman, age 80, of Farmville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home
surrounded by her loved ones on March 29, 2026, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s
disease and dementia.
She was born on April 1, 1945, in Sylvia, North Carolina, where she was raised and
graduated from high school. Sylvia always held a special place in her heart, and it will be her
final resting place.
After high school, Gwen moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she began her career in
healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant while attending nursing school. She went on to
work as a Licensed Practical Nurse for several years before earning her Bachelor’s degree in
Nursing. During her time in Charlotte, she married and had two children, Amanda and Jason.
Gwen later moved to Texas City, Texas, where she continued advancing her career while
working toward her Master’s degree in Nursing. Through dedication and hard work, she
rose through the ranks and went on to serve as a CEO for several hospitals across the
country. She eventually settled in Farmville, Virginia, where she worked at Centra Southside
Community Hospital from 2003 until her retirement in 2011. However, retirement did not
last long, as Gwen’s passion for nursing and helping others continued. She went on to help
create the nursing program at Longwood University and worked part-time as a liaison to
nursing students, sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation.
In her free time, Gwen enjoyed playing golf, crocheting and knitting, and most of all,
spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Hartsell (Sumner); her father, Homer Sisk;
her stepfather, Jim Hartsell; and her grandparents, Nanny Sumner and Crawford Sumner.
She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Haytasingh (Eddleman); her grandchildren,
Jasmine and Jordan Haytasingh; and her great-granddaughter, Nyomi Daniels.
Gwen will be remembered for her strength, compassion, and dedication to both her family
and her career. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville,
Virginia from 10am-12pm with a funeral service immediately following.
Interment will take place in Sylvia, North Carolina at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
