Janet Hunter Speas

December 26, 1931 — May 14, 2015

Janet Hunter Speas, 83 of Cumberland, VA passed away on May 14, 2015. She was born in North Carolina to the late Hiram G. and Ada Edwards Hunter on December 26, 1931. She worked over 30 years in Corrections and retired as a captain at Buckingham Correctional Center. She was the first woman captain in the state of Virginia as well as the first woman captain in a maximum security facility. She was a long time member of Jones Chapel Church and loved working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her daughters; Pat Speas of Cumberland, Rachel Speas of Farmville, brother; Allen Hunter of Rustburg, VA and her many beloved pets; Brandy, Hoppy, Max, Pickles, Rufus and Precious.

She was preceded in death by her son; Raven Speas and her brothers, Walter and Red Hunter.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2:00PM in the Jones Chapel Church with interment to follow in church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM at Puckett Funeral Home.
