Ruby Bell Johnson

Ruby Bell Routt Johnson, age 84 of Burkeville, VA, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025. She was the widow of Leonard Curtis Johnson, Sr. and the daughter of the late Roscoe H. Routt and Jewell Maxwell Routt.

Born September 21, 1940, she was preceded in death by a son Leonard Curtis Johnson Jr. sister, Reba Routt Warren, two brothers, Ray Routt and Roscoe R. Routt, sisters-in-laws Virginia Routt, Barbara Routt, and Joan Routt.

Ruby was born on the farm where her family lived in Cumberland County, later moving to the Abilene/Cullen area of Prince Edward County, where she grew up with her large family, raising tobacco, corn, and livestock. She attended Spring Creek Baptist Church and Darlington Heights School growing up. Once married, she moved to Crewe and finally Burkeville, where she helped Curtis run Johnson’s Garage for many years. She also worked at several area grocery stores and retired from The Woodlands in Farmville, where she established many long-term friendships.

She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Johnson Fowlkes (Graham) of Evington, VA, son Michael D. Johnson (Dana) of Crewe, VA, one granddaughter, Meghan Fowlkes of Evington, VA, sisters Rachael R. Lanham of Rice, Val, Roberta R. Shaw of Salem, VA. Rose R. Johnson of Glendale AZ. Three brothers, Ryland Routt of Amherst, VA, Roosevelt (Bobby) Routt of Casa Grande, AZ (Sue), and Ruben (Toby) Routt of Paris, KY (Brenda), sisters-in-law Ross Gallion of Keysville, VA and Joyce Banton of Powhatan, VA, many nieces and nephews.

A public viewing will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville, VA. Funeral and burial service will be at 11 am on Friday, August 22 nd , 2025, from the Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, VA.
