Listen to Obituary

Ruby Shirlen Latham Hall, 84, of Pamplin, Virginia, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 20, 2025, while surrounded by her family and friends in her home. Ruby was the wife of Hubert “Ronnie” Hall, a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother of many grandchildren who loved her dearly.

Ruby was born in Marion, North Carolina on May 14, 1941 to her parents, Wesley and Eva Shirlen. Her father, Wesley, was the Pastor of Bethany Pentecostal Holiness Church when Ruby was a child. Having been raised in church, Ruby had a devout faith in Jesus Christ that began at a young age and continued her entire life. Ruby’s favorite place to be was in church. Whether it be visiting Bethel Pentecostal Church with Pastor Brad Hendrix and wife Jennifer, or attending her home church, Prospect Gospel Tabernacle with Pastor Gary Stoots and wife Diana, and presently with Pastor Gary Stoots, Jr. and wife Cindie, Ruby’s favorite place to be was in church.

Ruby graduated from Star High School in Star, North Carolina in 1959 with many honors. She was the Class President, a member of the BETA Club, and “Miss Oak Leaves.” She later continued her education and graduated from Lynchburg Community College with a Secretarial of Science degree. Ruby served the Kingdom of God by singing in church for worship services and by singing at nursing homes for the elderly. She loved spending time with family and friends in both laughter and praise. She loved her Sunday meals at Arby’s where she and Ronnie would meet friends for lunch. She also loved to grow vegetable gardens and flower gardens. She was a woman of many talents. She was a professional seamstress at Karen’s Bridals for many years and loved to sew. She also volunteered at Lakewood Christian Education Center where she tutored students in reading. She played tennis, square and line danced and held a pilot’s license!

Ruby was preceded in death by her father, Wesley Enouch Shirlen, her mother, Eva Merleader Morgan, and three siblings, Homer Sherlin (Mildred), Leonard Eugene Shirlen (Mary), and one sister, Betty Irene Shumaker (Arthur).

Ruby is survived by her beloved husband, Hubert “Ronnie” Hall, her brother, Jimmy Carroll Shirlen and wife Billie, her sister, Christine Myrtle Smith and husband Larry, and two sons, Samuel L. Ferguson, Jr. and wife Sherry with six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, and David M. Ferguson and wife Sheila with 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Ruby is also survived by two stepdaughters, Lisa Adams and husband Tim, and Renee Kirtz and husband Jeff, as well as 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren: Melanie Adams and her children Katie, Logan, Faith and Jeremiah; Ryan and Robin Adams and children Trae and Landon; Brittany and Justin Bryant and children Bella, Bristol, and Justin, Jr.; Maeghan and Tim King; Wesley and Abby Kirtz and children Nora, Ryan, and Camille; and Emily and Ryan Carroll and children Ella, Easton, McKenzy, Sophia, and Gemma.

Ruby will be missed by so many that loved her. She will especially be missed by her husband, Ronnie. The love they shared was admirable. They served each other sacrificially and brought each other such abundant joy. Ruby and Ronnie spent her last seven years visiting those that were sick, shut-in, widowed, or needy. They prayed for them, offered companionship to them, and fed them. Together they ministered and shared the love of Jesus to many. Ruby left behind a legacy of faith in God and devotion to prayer. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Centra Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and support during Ruby’s final days. A special thank you to Ruby’s stepdaughters Lisa Adams and Renee Kirtz, and granddaughter Maeghan King who devoted 24/7 care for Ruby during the last month of her life. The Hall family thanks those who provided prayers, food, flowers, cards, and sympathy during this difficult time. May God bless you.
